چکیده

In this thesis we propose the use of non-orthogonal forward link for future CDMA cellular systenis. The non-orthogonal forward lin& uses long PN codes as the spreading codes. The use of long PN codes has a few advantages over the common practice of using orthogonal codes. It ailows the design of a flexible air interface that can easily accommodate multimedia traffic, and has the potential to offer substantial capacity improvement by exploiting future advances in source and channel coding. In addition, it allows hand-off-withoutsignaling which may have application in highly-dynamic propagation environments. We study the novel issue of correlation of interference at different diversity branches in a non-orthogonal forward link. Its e f k t on the performance of diversity combining is analysed. Simulation on system capacity, with the correlation effect taken in consideration, reveals that with the use of proper antenna diversity and channel coding techniques, nonorthogonal forward link offers roughly equal capacity comparing to orthogonal forward link, and has the potential to offer substantially higher capacity with future advances in source and channel coding. Performance of hand-off-without-signaling is also analysed.

1. Introduction In order to offer higher data-rate communication services above 2 Mbps in cellular systems, High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is currently under discussion in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) based on the W-CDMA air interface [1]. HSDPA contains such techniques as adaptive modulation and channel coding (AMC) in accordance with radio link conditions (fast lin...

Forward-link capacity of a DS/CDMA system with mixed multirate sources

Some studies have been done on capacity of a code division multiple access (CDMA) system with mixed multirate sources. However, a vast majority of these studies have concentrated on the reverse link. This trend comes from the fact that the capacity of a CDMA system is reverse-link limited. However, forward link can be a limiting link because emerging data services are likely to require higher d...

Performance Comparison of Orthogonal and Quasi-orthogonal Codes in Quasi-Synchronous Cellular CDMA Communication

Orthogonal and quasi-orthogonal codes are integral part of any DSCDMA based cellular systems. Orthogonal codes are ideal for use in perfectly synchronous scenario like downlink cellular communication. Quasi-orthogonal codes are preferred over orthogonal codes in the uplink communication where perfect synchronization cannot be achieved. In this paper, we attempt to compare orthogonal and quasi-o...
